SpaceX will attempt another experimental landing of its reusable Falcon 9 rocket early Friday morning.
The launch, set for 1:21 a.m. ET, will deliver a commercial communications satellite into orbit. Upon completion of the JCSAT-14 mission, the rocket will attempt to land itself on the unmanned drone ship “Of Course I Still Love You,” a repeat of the historic feat first achieved just last month.
Despite the earlier success, which followed a half-dozen ill-fated launches, SpaceX founder Elon Musk warned that Friday’s attempt will be much more complex, citing a “faster and hotter” reentry than last time. The company also said a successful landing was “unlikely” due to these new considerations. Regardless of the outcome, such trials are essential tests ahead of Musk’s first planned mission to Mars, which he hopes to send as early as 2018.
The entire process will air live on the SpaceX YouTube channel.
This is a developing story.
