This New Netflix Doc Hopes To Spark A Serious Conversation About Consensual Sex

Netflix just released a new trailer for the documentary “Audrie & Daisy,” which follows the aftermath of two statutory rape cases that occurred around the same time in 2012.
Though they lived in two different parts of the country, Audrie Pott and Daisy Coleman had a lot more in common than they realized. Both Audrie and Daisy—from California and Missouri respectively—were raped after passing out from a night of drinking. Both women were raped by boys they knew and both of their assaults were caught on camera. The attacks were spread on social media by their peers and they were both maliciously bullied because of it. The only difference? Audrie committed suicide just days later.
The film originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was picked up by Netflix eight months ago after receiving high praise. The Hollywood Reporter gave the film rave reviews, saying that in the right hands, the film could do well commercially like the similar film “The Hunting Ground.”
Showcasing the effects of sexual assault to the broad Netflix audience will hopefully spark conversations. Earlier this year, Cosmopolitan spoke to the film’s directors who wished the same. “Maybe there is never going to be a great legal solution to what happens when a guy and a girl are alone in a room,” said Shenk during the film’s premiere. “But, in general, is it good to be messing around with a girl if she is passed out? No matter what side of the topic you are on, any human being with common sense will say no, that’s wrong.”
“Audrie & Daisy” comes to Netflix on September 23rd.
