Cara Delevingne Responds to Bad 'Suicide Squad' Reviews, Says It's 'for the Fans' Not the 'Critics'
Suicide Squad may not be a critical darling, but the cast is ready for the fans to have a say.
Though the film has so far been panned — currently sitting at 29% on Rotten Tomatoes, only two percent better than the maligned Batman v Superman scored earlier this year — star Cara Delevingne and her castmates think that audiences will have a different take when it hits theaters on Friday.
“The critics have been absolutely horrific,” Delevingne told Reuters at the movie’s London premiere on Monday. “They’re really, really horrible … I just don’t think they like superhero movies.”
“At the end of the day, it’s the fans that we made this movie for,” the 23-year-old actress added.
Delevingne’s co-star, Will Smith, echoed her sentiment, telling the news agency, “I think people had expectations that may have been different, but I’m excited for the fans to get to vote.”

It’s not just the cast standing behind Suicide Squad.
In response to the bad Rotten Tomatoes score, a Change.org petition to shut down the site garnered more than 18,000 signatures. The drafter of the petition later suspended it, clarifying that the goal was obviously not to shut down Rotten Tomatoes, but to “deliver a message to the critics that there is a lot of people who disagree with their reviews.”

DC Comics has had a rough go of it on the aggregator website, while Marvel movies have tended to fare much better.
In response to the negative reviews, Suicide Squad director David Ayer tweeted a quote from historical Mexican revolutionary leader Emiliano Zapata, that roughly translates to “It is better to die at your feet, than to live on your knees.”

“Zapata quote is my way of saying I love the movie and believe in it,” Ayer clarified. “Made it for the fans. Best experience of my life.”
Ayer found himself in a bit of competitive hot water on Monday, when he shouted “F**k Marvel” at an audience during Suicide Squad‘s New York City premiere.

“Sorry about getting caught up in the moment and saying f**k Marvel,” Ayer apologized after the event. “Someone said it. I echoed. Not cool. Respect for my brother filmmakers.”
For the record, our take on the movie is that it’s a step in the right direction for DC (although not as good as that trailer made it seem), especially for breakout star Margot Robbie.
