Son creates art with her 91-year-old mother, helps her feel youthful and fun again
When Tony Luciani’s mother was no longer able to take care of herself, the Canadian-Italian artist became his mothers full time care giver. As an artist that worked in his studio at home, he felt safer having his 91-year-old mother in his home with him.
While working in his studio, his mother would watch him work. Often times, he would use this opportunity to paint or sketch his her but one day, the light breaking through a window fell on his mother perfectly. The artist said in this moment, “I put down my paintbrushes and picked up the camera to take some pictures.”
It was then that Tony decided to include his mother in his artworks. Commenting about his mother, Tony said, “She’s a natural model. I saw that she was enjoying the role-playing. From there, the concepts started flowing and the photos became about storytelling, almost like my mother’s diary.”
Here are some of the beautiful photos the artist took of his mother.
In the beginning, the artist included his mother as a means of making her feel more productive but after working together, he realized that he did more than made her feel productive. Tony says, “I noticed how alive she felt by participating; her youthfulness and eccentricity started to show through.”
“I’m trying to encourage the idea that no matter how we are seen on the outside, we can be ourselves on the inside,” Tony explained.
“If that means feeling silly or letting out a scream of frustration, it’s perfectly fine to do so, without restrictions. I think we brought that to the surface in this project by capturing her internal and external emotions, sometimes within the same photograph.”
As we can see in these playful images, the 91-year-old mother still has a lot of life in her. Through this project, the artist was able to see a side of this mother he hasn’t seen in a long time.
He says it also gave him a new perspective on life saying, “The more I reflect on Mom’s story by posting these photographs on social media, the more people who see the pictures express a profound association by relaying their own experiences with age and dementia. These images have struck a chord with many individuals. Life is not about waiting to die. It’s about wanting to live.”
It was through these images that that artist wanted to describe his mothers experience of coming to terms with aging, memory loss, and physical decline. Although these problems exist, Tony wanted to make a point that we should be embracing life to the fullest, enjoying every moment on this earth even if we are 90 years old. He hopes that the art work between him and his mother can be an example of how even in old age, you can live a happy existence full of youth.
