Ibtihaj Muhammad And The U.S. Women’s Fencing Team Win Bronze
Team USA continues to rack up medals, with the U.S. Olympic Women’s Fencing Team earning the Bronze medal on Saturday in Rio de Janeiro.
Teammates Mariel Zagunis, Dagmara Wozniak and Ibtihaj Muhammad defeated Poland in the team sabre quarterfinals early on Saturday before scoring top marks against Italy in the afternoon Bronze medal match.
The final tally was U.S.A. 45, Italy 30.
Muhammad received widespread national attention in the lead up to Rio, where she became the first U.S. athlete to compete at the Olympics in a hijab. Now, she is the first American woman to win a medal at the Olympics while wearing a hijab, too.
The last time the women’s fencing team won a medal was silver at the 2008 Beijing Olympic games.
