This Passenger Raised Money To Send An Olympian's Uber-Driving Dad To Rio

Uber driver Ellis Hill never imagined he would be able to afford a trip to Rio to watch his son Darrell compete in the shot put event. That is, until he encountered a very generous passenger.

During an hourlong car ride, Hill and his passenger chatted, and he shared that he would not be able to watch his son compete in the Olympics.

“It was devastating to hear that,” passenger Liz Willock explained to People. “Here’s this wonderful man who has a close relationship with his son and I know any parent would want to see their son or daughter compete at the Olympics, but it was very understandable how that could be out of reach.”

Willock felt so moved by his story that she set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for Ellis to see his son in all his glory. The fundraiser description reads, “As a proud father, Ellis dreams of traveling to Rio to see his son compete.  Please help make this American dream come true.”

In less than a week, the campaign goal of $7,500 was surpassed. It’s safe to say both Ellis and Darrell were thrilled.

“I cant wait to see him and encourage him in person and let him know I’m 100 percent in his corner,” Ellis said.

Be sure to catch the men’s shot put qualifiers begin in Rio on Aug. 18.
