Bus driver writes Facebook post after hearing school refused to feed student, gets fired over it
Johnny Cook, a bus driver in the Haralson County, Georgia lost his job after he posted a controversial Facebook post. What the Facebook post entailed was a heartbreaking story about a student informing Cook that he was hungry because his lunch card was 40 cents short. With the child being short 40 cents, he was not allowed to eat lunch at Haralson County Middle School.
This bothered the kind bus driver. Cook said, “Had it on my mind and had it on my heart and simply made the Facebook post.” Cook even went as far as to posting his phone number along with the post saying, “The next time we have a kid at the register for 40 cent and we can’t feed him, please call me. I’ll scrape up the money.”
The kind act did not go unnoticed. The post ended up receiving over 200 likes from Facebook users in various locations.
The post eventually caught the school districts attention seeing as the very next day, Cook was called into a meeting with the superintendent. The bus driver was given two options at the meeting, retract the post and apologize or be fired.
After the meeting, Cook said, “I felt like in my heart of hearts the kid was telling the truth. Whether he was or whether he wasn’t, I believed him. So I was not going to recant the story.” With Cook standing by the student’s statement, he was immediately fired from his duties.
After being fired and posting it on Facebook, Cook told reporters, “I’ve had phone calls from here to Spokane, WA, to Texas to Maine saying ‘That happened to my kid, thank you for standing up’”
The controversial aspect of the student’s story did not end in Cook’s post.
It was when Haralson County Superintendent Brett Stanton told reporters, “I can assure you it did not happen.”
Stanton said that he investigated the situation thoroughly and that “The video surveillance footage clearly shows that the student never went through the lunch lines at the county middle school.”
The Superintendent stated that if the student went through the lunch lines and was short 40 cents, that he would be given a bagged lunch for students in his situation.
Although the surveillance footage was never released, Mr. Johnny Cook remained laid off from his job.
When questioned about how Cook felt about losing his job he said, “I’m proud of the reaction and I’m proud I was able to make a stand when some people may not be able to. And maybe I was able to make a change, in some way, cause a little change.” What an outstanding citizen who cares about the children he works with.
