In 2012, A Drive-By Shooting Left Him Paralyzed. 4 Years Later, He Defies All Expectations

In December 2012, Aaron Willis was victim to a random shooting in Miami, Florida.

Racing on his bike to get back home before dark, a passing car sprayed shots in his direction, resulting in Aaron being struck in his back before he was thrown off his bike.

The injuries Aaron sustained from this shooting were tremendous, and the incident left him with a punctured lung and a shattered vertebrae.

Unfortunately, the culprits of this shooting were never identified, and Aaron had to live with a constant reminder since he was never able to walk again.

In one night, Aaron went from being a freshman football player in high school to a paraplegic. Not unfamiliar with adversity, Aaron’s family was homeless when he was 6, and this shooting became another problem his family had to fight through.

This was not an easy fight though, and Aaron even openly discussed how he had suicidal thoughts at times when he was recovering from the incident.

“The most difficult thing I accomplished in school was just keeping myself together,” Aaron explained. With the support of his friends and family, paired with a strong will to keep fighting, Aaron turned heads at his high school graduation when he walked across the stage.

With the help of the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis at the University of Miami, Aaron participated in a study involving bionic legs. Against all odds, Aaron was miraculously learning to walk again.

During his high school graduation, Aaron surprised the room when he left his wheelchair and walked to his diploma.

Strapped into the bionic legs and supported by a set of crutches, Aaron received a standing ovation as the crowd chanted his name.

Headed to the Florida International University with a scholarship this coming year, Aaron has seemingly made the impossible happen. Once told he would be bound to his wheelchair for life, Aaron is already taking steps towards having full function in his legs.

“I’m not walking for myself. I’m walking for my family,” Aaron said before receiving his high school diploma. The struggle his family has gone through to help him get through this tremendous obstacle is being rewarded now that he is learning to use the bionic legs.

Aaron Willis has already gone against all odds, and he has no plans of stopping as he moves forward to college.
