Brits Teach Us About Consent With Stick Figures And Tea And It"s Brilliant

The Brits created the perfect analogy to explain the concept of consent.

It’s 2016, yet people still struggle with the idea of consent. Consent, by definition, is “permission” to do something with another person that is formed by and “agreement” allowing that to happen.

Seems simple, right? Unfortunately, there are a lot of people around the world who are still struggling with respecting everyone’s right to consent. Since the Stanford rape case reemphasized the fact that people are still abusing the notion of consent, a police force across the pond decided to make a video describing what consent actually is in the most unexpected way: with tea. 

Consent is really not that hard to figure out.

The Thames Valley Police highlighted the issues surrounding consent with this instructional video illustrated by Rachel Brian and written by Emmeline May. The clip walks viewers through the various stages of consent.

They open with the scenario of someone offering tea.

Sometimes tea is really appealing, and the other person will welcome the offer.

Sometimes this person changes their mind, and they no longer want the tea.

It doesn’t matter if this person changed their mind, one should never be forced to drink tea.

And if the person is unconscious or unable to answer, you should not give them tea.

“An unconscious person does not want tea, so don’t make them tea.”

Sex is no different. If someone wants something and then changes their mind, respect that. If someone doesn’t want something, respect that. If someone wanted something at one time, but doesn’t want it at another, respect that.

Consent is as simple as respecting another person and their decisions, and if that person is incapable of making that decision, one must respect them by not taking advantage of their altered state.
