Four children left orphans after black ice causes car accident in Daylesford killing both parents

Black ice is being blamed for a car accident that killed a couple and left four children orphans.

Michael, 41, and Jo Glare, 39, were killed after their car hit black ice on a Victorian Highway heading towards Daylesford and smashed into a tree at around 8am on Saturday.

Their 18-year-old daughter Rhiannon was also in the car at the time of the accident and she is currently being treated at Ballarat Base Hospital.

The couple from Swan Hill in north west Victoria also leave behind one other daughter and two sons, the youngest aged just 13.

Mr Glare’s sister Kerrie Munro told the Herald Sun that her brother and his wife were taking Rhiannon to a darts competition when the ‘freak accident’ occurred.

Her brothers and sister were also being consoled in Ballarat.

‘They have lost both parents at the same time the poor things,’ Ms Munro told Sunday Herald Sun.

Tributes have started flowing for the parents who were well respected and loved by their local community.

They were heavily involved in the speedway motor sport scene.

‘I’m going to miss you…now who will tell me that it’s the wrong thing to do and sit with me at poker telling me I’m bluffing you be missed by so many you and ur (sic) loving and caring wife was wonderful,’ one tribute read.

Another wrote: ‘Michael was all about his family n kids n would do anything to help anyone out at the speedway, why does the man up above take all the good ones? I feel for the poor kids it’s just so sad.’

‘My most heartfelt sympathies go to the Glare family and Jo and Michael’s children. Both of you were truly great people and this world is going to not be the same without you,’ one of the messages that flooded social media for the family.

The horrific accident occurred on Saturday morning when the family’s Holden Commodore lost control on a bend on the Midland Highway and struck a tree.

Police believe the car was travelling below the 100km/h speed limit but the presence of black ice made road conditions dangerous.

‘It’s not easily observable and will take a car off the road that weighs a tonne and a half easily,’ Sergeant Robert Pama of Victoria Police said.

‘The lower the speed, the lower the impact, the more that you’ll survive.’

Police warned motorists to be alert of black ice over the next few days as more freezing weather is forecasted.
