Town Ignores Helpless Eagle Stuck In Tree, But Watch What An Army Veteran Does
Nothing quite screams ‘America’ like an eagle being rescued from a tree from an Army Veteran just before the fourth of July. To add another dimension to this already crazy story, he managed to save the eagle by using his 22 long rifle.
The hero in this story, Jason Galvin, noticed an eagle dangling by it’s leg on a branch high up on a tree near Rush City, Minnesota. The bird was hanging about 70 feet above the ground when he found it.
Jason grabbed his binoculars to check whether the eagle was still alive or not and then noticed its head start to move.
The eagles talon was caught on a rope that was about 4 inches long and secured to the branch. He called the police, the fire department, and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to see if they could save the eagle.
Unfortunately, they had already known about the bird for about two days, but did not have the jurisdiction to bring it down.
Jason’s wife, Jackie, then asked her husband if there was anything he could do. He thought he might be able to shoot the rope down from a distance using his rifle, but needed they go ahead from the DNR.
They said it was alright, and he went and grabbed his 22 long rifle.
The shot was difficult for many reasons including the surrounding, leaves, branches, wind and sun, but it was also difficult because he felt uncomfortable about shooting in the direction of an eagle.
He tried again and again for about an hour and a half trying to shoot the rope and branch free, so that the bird could escape.
“I was very nervous,” he said. “I didn’t want at all to hit that bird.”
It ended up taking around 150 shots, but he finally landed his mark– like the true eagle-eyed sharp shooter he is.
Jack is an Army veteran who had already served two separate tours in Afghanistan, so he was well versed in rifles and shooting at the time.
A neighbor and a conservation officer grabbed the eagle after it came tumbling down and sent it to the Raptor Center. The eagle was named Freedom and is now recovering well.
