Single mom needs a home for her family, transforms a shipping container into a home with her hands
Life for a single mother is very difficult. If anyone tells you anything else, they don’t know what they’re talking about. It can be hard for a single mother because raising kids can be expensive.
As a single parent, you have to take care of the children (shower, feed, put to sleep, etc), but also make a living. Without the help of a partner, a lot of stress is put on the single parent. If you choose to work 20-30 hours a week just to pay rent, this means time away from your children.
Lulu was in this exact predicament, but decided to do something a little unorthodox to be able to spend time with her kids. With a suggestion from her friend, she decided to build their family’s home out of a shipping container. Building her own home, she was able to avoid working 30 hours a week just to pay rent. This resulted in her being able to spend more time with her children.
The determined mother didn’t have much experience in construction, but was still able to accomplish the feat. It took Lulu just one month to cut the windows, a door and install the insulation. But that wasn’t all she was able to do. Lulu was also able to install a basic kitchen (complete with propane-powered camp stove and on-demand water heater).
After the success of building her kitchen/living room area, Lulu decided the family needed a bit more space. She then turned a flatbed trailer into the bedroom area which she shares with her four girls. The flatbed trailer serves as a play room and bedroom for the family.
The incredible part about the flatbed trailer was that Lulu built it from scraps. Trying to save money, she frequently went to the junkyard and sought out parts she could use to make the bedroom.
I find it incredible that Lulu did all of this just to avoid working. It’s not avoiding work that i’m amazed about, it’s the fact that she did this to spend more time with her kids.
If we can take away something from Lulu’s story, it’s to always make time for our children. They don’t remain as kids forever, so make sure to spend time with them.
