Actor Tim Healy is reported to be “fighting for his life” in hospital after being struck down with a mystery illness in Spain , where he’s filming ITV’s hit show Benidorm. He plays transvestite Lesley on the show.

The 64-year-old actor was under the care of doctors in Spain after he fell in a month ago, but was then flown to Manchester after his condition improved.

His family have been holding a bedside vigil for the sick actor now that he’s back in the UK.

An insider said: “Tim has been in a bad way for a while and had to pull out of filming Benidorm. He was in hospital for three and a half weeks, and at one point he was fighting for his life.

“But he was flown to Manchester on Saturday and his condition has improved. His wife Joan has been by his side throughout the ordeal.

“He’s still in hospital but is making progress. The doctors are keeping a constant eye on him.”

Has he had any health problems in the past?

The actor’s illness is as yet undisclosed, but he’s had problems with his arteries in the past.

In 2011 – after a year of agony – the actor had life-saving surgery to unblock the arteries in both legs after being diagnosed with a condition known as intermittent claudication.

Denise admitted at the time: “I was terrified Tim could die. I tried to stay strong for him but I was scared.

“He was in agony with the pain in his legs but, being a typical man, he’d feel a bit better and say, ‘I’m fine, I don’t need to go to the doctor’.”

Playing down the op, Tim said: “Denise is a bit dramatic about this.

“I was never frightened of dying or anything like that. But a lot of my family died young, so I know why she worries.

“It was a huge success and I’m very much back on the road now. I’m a different person – I’m sorted.”

He said of the surgery: “I had it on the Saturday and they’re supposed to keep you in for five days, but I couldn’t stand it.

“I was desperate to get home – the hospital’s only 10 minutes from my house.

“They keep you in intensive care for 24 hours after the op, then after that I was up and walking about straight away.

“I said I can’t stay in here for a week – so the doctor said, ‘Go on then, but I’ll ring you every night’. So that’s what I did.”

In the wake of the surgery Tim also pledged to cut down on his 30-a-day cigarette habit.
