Twists in time
We pick up straight after last week, as Meera tries to escape the clutches of the White Walkers with Bran, following Hodor’s heartbreaking sacrifice.
Bran is still passed out, having visions of the past, and she’s struggling to get him through the snow.
In a series of blink-and-you’ll-miss-them flashbacks, Bran sees everything from the White Walkers taking Craster’s last son in the forest (season four) to his mum getting killed at the Red Wedding (season three) and his dad losing his head (season one).
But there’s also a few previously unseen things, most important of which is us finally getting a glimpse of Aerys Targaryen – the Mad King from before the series started – shouting “burn them all” as he’s killed by Jamie Lannister.
But interestingly, his shouting appears over the top of flashing images of White Walkers, and wildfire being created.
Is it possible that Aerys wasn’t referring to King’s Landing after all, and that the king was driven mad trying to tell everyone how to kill the White Walkers?
OR is it even possible that Bran will accidentally cause his madness by telling him about the coming evil? Remember a few weeks ago Bran was able to shout out in a vision and be heard by his father .

Benjen Stark in Game of Thrones
Either way, there’s plot twists being lined up in the coming episodes, I can feel it.
Back to the present day though, and as Bran wakes from his vision, the pair are located by the army of the dead, who move in for the kill.
Luckily, at that moment, a mystery rider in black appears and kills all the zombies – using fire in the form of a burning ball and chain (burn them all….).
We soon find out their saviour it’s Bran’s Uncle Benjen! Missing since episode three of season one!
Seems Benjen was killed by the White Walkers, but saved by the Children of the Forest before he could become an evil zombie. So he’s a good zombie? I’m not sure, but he’s back and kicking ass, and that’s the important thing.
The adorable rom-com sideplot
Sam features too
Sam has taken baby Sam and Gilly back to his parents’ place, to keep her safe while he’s off training to become a maester.
It seems his dad is not a fan though and after the most awkward family dinner ever, goes into a rant about how disappointed he is in Sam.
Papa gets even more annoyed when he finds out that Gilly is actually a hated wildling.
Fortunately Sam’s mum is more forgiving and wants to keep Gilly and the baby in the castle, but that doesn’t stop his dad from banishing his son from there forever.
As he’s preparing to leave his missus behind, Sam has a change of heart and decides the family belong together.
The three make a run for it together in the middle of the night, but not before Sam steals his father’s heirloom Valyrian steel blade.
That’d be the same sort of special sword that Jon Snow used to kill a White Walker that time then?
It’s almost like they’re collecting magic swords together, to fight a big battle at some point in the future…
Making powerful enemies
Things really are moving on for Arya.
After chatting to the target she was told to kill by the temple of the faceless men, she takes pity on her and stops her drinking poisoned rum. Instead she warns her new actor pal that a rival wants her dead.
It’s great to see that Arya hasn’t lost her sense of right and wrong after all she’s been through.
But the Waif obviously runs off to tell Jaqen H’ghar, who is busy cutting off some dead guy’s face (everyone needs a hobby, right?), and he replies: “A shame, a girl had many gifts”.
He’s not best pleased and rather chillingly sends the Waif away with the phrase: “Don’t let her suffer”.
Luckily Arya has retrieved her old sword Needle from its hiding place and keeps it close to hand as she goes to bed for the night.
Hope you’ve been practicing mate – you’re gonna need it.
Putting your faith in the Faith
Will it be repeated?
The Queen stars
Little King Tommen has a chat with the High Sparrow, who still seems determined to make queen Margaery do a walk of atonement like Cersei had to last year.
After a quick natter, the priest lets the king visit his queen, who is acting a bit cagey, but seems to want to talk about her new discovered love of religion. “The gods have a plan for us all” apparently.
Fast forward a bit, and Jamie Lannister shows up at the Sept with Margaery’s dad and a small army, with the plan to rescue her and her brother Loris before her long naked walk.
There’s a bit of a standoff, where Jamie threatens to kill all the sparrows, and the High Sparrow says that dying for their gods is what they’d all want.
It all looks like we’re FINALLY going to get the awesome battle sequence we’ve been waiting for all year.
But at that point, the priest says there’s no need for a walk of atonement after all, because Margaery has proved her faith in another way – by converting the King.

What will come of it?
Out walks Tommen to rain on Jamie’s parade, complete with Kingsguard in new armour showing their allegiance to the Faith.
Jamie looks gutted, the High Sparrow looks smug, and everyone’s favourite snappy granny Olenna Tyrell sums it up by saying: “He’s beaten us, that’s what’s happening.”
It’s an interesting twist, but has Margaery really joined the gods squad? I’m not convinced.
The way she spoke in previous episodes, as well as this one, makes it seem like this is just part of another power play.
This way she not only gets her freedom from the cells, but she wins the power of the King back from Jamie and Cersei (who are understandably peeved at this turn of events).
It’s a risky strategy though. That High Sparrow isn’t stupid, and I reckon she may have bitten off a bit more than she can chew here.
Running off to Riverrun
Back at the Twins, and it seems like Walder Frey still hasn’t moved from his chair since the Red Wedding back in season three.
He’s annoyed that his sons have managed to lose the castle of Riverrun to Brynden “Blackfish” Tully, who managed to escape the marriage that killed the vast bulk of his family.
Walder tells his sons to retake the castle at any cost, and we see that he’s still keeping the Blackfish’s nephew Edmure captive.
Meanwhile, the events at the Sept mean that Jamie has been booted out of the Kingsguard, and banished from King’s Landing by Tommen – so apparently he is going to be leading the attack.
He’s not very happy, but Cersei sees it as a chance for them to show their strength again – and to join up with the Lannister army too…

Daenarys on a dragon in Game of Thrones
If there’s just one thing we learned above anything else this week it’s this: If you want to make an epic speech, do it while sat on top of a dragon.
Earlier on, we had the bumbling Mace Tyrell make an underwhelming speech to his men. “Madness has had it’s day,” he yelled. Everyone sorta shuffled about a bit and then they were on their way.
Fast forward to the end of the episode, and we see Daenarys sat on top of Drogon, shouting in Dothraki about sailing over the seas and conquering the world.
And the crowd goes wild.
We know that Dany is an inspiring leader, but the fire breathing lizard helps, that’s all I’m saying.

The dragons return
It’s lucky the dragon was around too (he was hidden around the corner, as far as I can tell) as it’s one of the last pieces of the all-conquering army she needs.
All she is missing now is “at least a thousand” ships. Alas, her’s got sunk a couple of weeks ago, but as you’ll remember from last week’s episode Euron Greyjoy is working on building exactly that many ships as we speak.
Lucky that…
