Rescuers Doubted Abused Lion Would Survive The Night. Then HE Walks In…

When Sheila and Khan, a lioness and a lion, were both rescued from abusive owner, they probably didn’t expect their lives to change so drastically. At their worst, they were malnourished, weak, and barely unable to eat or walk.

Sheila was in much worse shape, as she was close to dying. “For two weeks, I had to go in with Sheila and hand-feed her,” said Vicky Keahy, the owner of wildlife rescue center that took the lions in. “I’d roll up meat balls and literally stuff them down her throat.”

The two have since been nursed back to good health and are now very much in love.

The shelter that took them in is a local facility in Texas called In-Sync Exotics Wildlife Rescue and Education Center. Kahn was taken in at 6 years old in March of 2009. Sheila came four months later, in July.

Khan was in bad condition, as he had his tail completely chewed off. Keahey and her team thought Kahn might have done this to himself out of stress and boredom. He also had difficulty walking due to bone issues.

According to Keahey, Kahn was super friendly though and was very easy to take care of.

Sheila was in much worse shape and rescuers initially thought that she might have to be euthanized when she came in at 15 months old. She would lie around lifeless without any appeteite, and she wasn’t able to even life her head to drink water. Keahey was determined to save her though.

She did some research and discovered that Sheila had Vitamin A deficiency along with toxoplasmosis, an illness that she contracted from a parasite.

Once the wildlife rescue center began to treat Sheila, she was able to recover quickly. Both the lion and the lioness were then healthy again!

The wildlife center decided to create a new lion enclosure so that Kahn and Sheila could be side by side. Once they moved in, Keahey’s team noticed that the two seemed to develop an affection for one another.

“Sheila spent the next few months showing off for Kahn, and Kahn strutted his stuff for her,” said Keahey.

The two were then allowed play dates with each other. They had short dates every single day, that eventually grew longer– then the dates were unsupervised. After three months of dating, the wildlife center decided to marry Sheila and Kahn.

The happy and healthy lions are now living an enclosure with one another and love each others attention!
