Firefighters are tackling a huge blaze at a Yorkshire lorry depot where potentially explosive gases are stored inside.


Hundreds of people have been told to stay indoors as emergency services work at the scene at Thorn Tree Farm, near Shelf, Halifax. 


West Yorkshire Fire Service said the fire was reported at 11.41am today after witnesses reported hearing explosions as fuel tanks, of what is thought to be scrap vehicles, went up in smoke.

West Yorkshire Fire Service said the fire was reported at 11.41am after witnesses reported hearing explosions as fuel tanks, of what is thought to be scrap vehicles, went up in smoke

Around 25 lorries are housed in the industrial building and reports have also said that there could be explosive gases inside too.


Residents could see a large mushroom cloud of fire but emergency services have said that the blaze looks worse that it is.


The fire service said diesel, LPG and acetylene is on the site and are advising people to stay inside for safety.


The A644 Brighouse Road is currently closed in both directions between A647 and A6036 and there are diversions for traffic in the area.


West Yorkshire Police’s Road Policing Unit said on Twitter that: ‘Due to a large fire near to Stone Chair roundabout near Shelf please only use this route if necessary, long delays expected.’


There has been no injuries reported and evacuations were not necessary, as the fire is now under control.


The fire service said the blaze was expected to be ‘protracted’ and that crews would be kept at the site throughout the evening.
