Chinese Monk Arrested Over Nightclub Murders
A man who has been living as a monk for more than a decade has been arrested in China in connection with a nightclub killing 16 years ago.
Zhang Liwei is accused of being part of a group that stabbed to death three people in his home province of Heilongjiang.
After the murders Zhang fled more than 1,000 miles south to Anhui, where he found refuge in Buddhist temples, according to state media.
The Beijing News said he changed his name to Wen Shiguang, shaved his head, and proclaimed himself a monk.
Zhang is then said to have moved around temples before he settled in Longxing temple in Fengyang county.
Local reports said the monks appreciated his efforts to improve their living conditions and Zhang was supporting two orphans financially.
It is also believed his fellow monks elected him abbot two years ago, that he is a member of a government advisory body, and that he headed the county-level Buddhist association.
Zhang was detained when he applied for a passport to travel abroad and submitted his fingerprints – which allegedly match those of the wanted man.
