Sheridan Smith reportedly had a secret fling with The C-Word co-star Paul Nicholls when they were working on the TV drama.

The Funny Girl actress – who will be taking a break from the West End show “due to stress and exhaustion – worked with the actor on the programme in 2014 before it aired last year.

A source told The Sun on Sunday: “They were clearly attracted to each other but they kept their romance quiet. They didn’t want it to cause problems on the show.”

The report adds that they bonded over the character, with the insider added: “It was very emotionally draining. Sheridan felt the pressure to do Lisa justice. Paul was there for her and they got to know each other properly.

“But they hadn’t been seeing each other long when Pete flew off the handle, and they had a fiery row. Sheridan left his flat and they never picked up where they left off.”

Sheridan blasted critics on Twitter after Sunday evening’s Bafta TV awards and has not appeared on stage since.

She wrote: “When will u stop bullying? I had the best night in memory of my girl @LisaLynch.”

She was nominated for best leading actress for her role in The C Word as the late Lisa Lynch, but lost out to Suranne Jones.

Bafta host Graham Norton’s opening monologue appeared to contain a joke at Smith’s expense, when he quipped: “We’re all excited for a couple of drinks tonight. Or, as it’s known in theatrical circles, a few glasses of ‘technical difficulties’.”

This came less than two weeks after a performance was cancelled half way through, which producers said was down to “technical difficulties”.

A spokesman for Smith has said that the allegations were “categorically not true”.

The actress also responded on Twitter to a story alleging that she had been a sore loser at the Baftas, writing: “Why watch me & not the show????? Weird.”
