Despite the best efforts of that renowned European country Australia, it was the Ukraine that triumphed at Eurovision.

And for many it was a symbolic David and Goliath victory as they trounced political rivals Russia.

And with a song lamenting Russian military aggression in the Crimea this fact was obviously not lost on winning singer Jamala.

But she is, like most Eurovision singers all about “peace and love.”

Speaking after her win, she said: “I know that you sing songs about peace and love but actually, I really want peace and love to everyone. Thank you Europe.”

But who is this amazing songstress?

Born in Osh in the former Soviet Union, which is now located in Kyrgystan, Jamala was given the name Susanna Jamalaadinova. Her family lived in the area after Stalin forced her great-grandparents to move from Crimea, something that heavily influenced her song 1944.

Wait, what happened in 1944?

The forcible deportation of the Crimean Tatars from Crimea was ordered by Joseph Stalin as a form of collective punishment for alleged collaboration with the Nazis. A total of more than 230,000 people were deported, mostly to the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic. This included the entire ethnic Crimean Tatar population. It is considered to be a case of ethnic cleansing.

What’s the latest political situation?

Not great. In 2014, Russia made several incursions into Ukrainian territory. Beginning with Crimea.

In November 2014, the Ukrainian military reported intensive movement of troops and equipment from Russia into the separatist controlled parts of eastern Ukraine. According to a former Pentagon strategy adviser there were as many as 7,000 Russian troops inside Ukraine in early November 2014.

Amnesty International have condemned Russia for its actions in post-revolutionary Ukraine, accusing it of breaking international law and violating Ukrainian sovereignty.

The conflict wasn’t all violence, at time it was actually ridiculous as a statue of Lenin was replaced by one of Darth Vader. We’re sure Putin won’t put up with this sith for long.

She won the 1 Concorso Europeo Amici delia musica International contest in Italy, thrusting her into the limelight.

But it wasn’t until 2009 when she entered the New Wave contest that she won the grand prize, and then set her sights on Eurovision.
