Alleged 'Tinder killer' victim 'had 80 injuries'
A woman on a Tinder date suffered 80 injuries when she plunged to her death from a 14th-storey balcony, an Australian court has heard.
Warriena Wright, 26, had gone to the Gold Coast apartment of Gable Tostee six days after they first made contact on the dating app.
Ms Wright, a New Zealander who had been holidaying in Australia, had met Tostee on 7 August, 2014, spending a few minutes in a local pub together before heading to Tostee’s apartment via an off-licence.
The Queensland Supreme Court in Brisbane has heard that the pair spent the night together but, at some point in the early hours of the next day, Ms Wright fell from the high-rise balcony.
The final witness in the Crown’s case was a pathologist, who said that Ms Wright had “severe injuries to all her body that caused her death”, adding that her body had been “almost folded over on itself, her head was hyper-flexed down towards her trunk”.
The pathologist added that “poorly defined” red marks on Ms Wright’s neck were “not consistent with any application of force”, according to a report from news.com.au.
Audio recorded by Tostee and played to the court appear to show the pair fighting, with Tostee complaining that Ms Wright had beaten him up, saying: “You are lucky I haven’t chucked you off my balcony…If you try to pull anything, I’ll knock you out”.
Ms Wright is heard to yell “no” amid the sound of what seems to be a door unlocking and then saying “just let me go home” a number of times.
Prosecutors say that Ms Wright was locked out on the balcony by Tostee and felt so scared of him that she tried to escape by climbing down to a lower floor. Instead, she fell.
Tostee, 30, is accused of her murder, a charge he denies.
On Wednesday the court heard that Tostee had been pictured leaving his apartment at 2.24am, after Ms Wright’s fall, wandering along various streets and into a local park before buying a slice of pizza at 3.12am.
The trial will resume on Friday morning, local time.
