At the tender age of 28, pro skateboarder Dylan Rieder lost his battle with leukemia following complications related to the illness on Wednesday night.
The extreme sports star – who also modelled with Cara Delevingne in the past – has received an outpouring of remembrances on social media, including a touching tribute from Ozzy Osbourne.
While Twitter itself created an In Memoriam page on Wednesday to commemorate the skater.
So who exactly was Dylan Rieder?

What’s his background?
Dylan grew up in Westminster, California, where he began skating at the age of nine. By the time he turned 18 he had worked his way up to the top of the sport and went pro for American skateboarding company Alien Workshop.
His breakout came in 2006 thanks to a part in skateboarding magazine, Transworld Skateboarding’s video A Time To Shine.
He also teamed with Alien Workshop for a part in 2009’s Mind Field and in 2010 he starred in a solo part for Gravis Footwear, entitled Dylan.
Last year he won Transworld Skateboarding’s award for Best Part in Supreme’s video for Cherry.
His success led to him being sponsored by major skate houses like Birdhouse, Quicksilver, Supreme, Spitfire and Thunder.
He also owned New York store The Hunt.
Why is he in the news?
Dylan sadly passed away on Wednesday following complications related to his battle with leukemia.
“Today, October 12th, 2016, surrounded by family and friends, Dylan Joseph Rieder passed away due to complications with Leukemia. His passion for life, art, music, fashion and skateboarding has always been contagious,” read a family statement posted on Jenkem Magazine’s Facebook page.
“Dylan will be remembered by all as a loving son, brother and friend. In lieu of sending flowers, the family requests donations be made in Dylan’s memory to Dr. Stephen Forman.”
Fans and peers were quick to pay tribute to the man once dubbed the ‘most handsome man in skateboarding’, describing him as a “really nice person”.
A&R producer Dante Ross tweeted: “Rest in Power Dylan Rieder gone way too soon a style master and really nice person.
“My deepest condolences to his close friends and family…Things don’t make sense god ain’t always fair and thats 1 of the only things I know is a fact in the lifetime.”
Transworld Skateboarding posted: “It’s hard to believe even typing this — we lost one of the best to ever step on a skateboard today.
“Dylan Rieder, whose flawless style, explosive power and epic video parts influenced an entire generation and beyond, passed away today due to complications with Leukemia.
“Rest in peace, Dylan. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family in this unbelievably difficult time.”
Anything else we should know?
It seems Dylan was very close to Ozzy Osbourne.
Upon hearing the news, Ozzy shared a touching tribute on Twitter, captioning a snap of the pair together, he wrote: “Dylan Rieder. One of the most talent & brave men. I feel blessed to have known you.
“Rest In Peace Dylan. My love & condolences to his family”.

Dylan also found a more mainstream kind of fame when he turned his hand to modelling in 2014, working alongside some of Britain’s top models.
Picked by top fashion house DKNY, Dylan starred in their campaign alongside Cara Delevingne and Jourdan Dunn.
He recently revealed he was planning to return to skateboarding having not competed professionally since February 2016.
