The First "Assassin"s Creed" Trailer Levels Up Video Game Movies

This is in-creed-ible.

Video game movies are often plagued by one minor problem: They’re terrible. Something is just lost when you give up control of your character and can’t go on 30 or 40 random side missions. And it’s just bad, bad, bad, bad, bad.

So what the heck happened with “Assassin’s Creed”?

The movie, which stars Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, actually looks like the game. Impressive, immersive landscapes are a staple of the “Assassin’s Creed” franchise, and somehow the trailer, which has a very “300” feel, looks like it sticks the landing right into a giant bale of hay.

Fassbender is reportedly playing a new character entering the Animus (a machine that lets you relive the lives of your ancestors) to take on the Spanish Inquisition. The change means you might not see some of your favorite characters from the game come to life on screen, but if the movie also makes sure Fassbender doesn’t spend the majority of the time slowly walking behind people and climbing up the wrong buildings, then we’re cool with it.

“Assassin’s Creed” hits theaters Dec. 21.
